The 2026 Recipe Change

Burger King officially updated the Whopper in 2026, its first real recipe change in years. Tom Curtis, president of Burger King U.S. & Canada, said in the announcement: “The Whopper is an icon, so we didn’t set out to reinvent it. Instead, we elevated it based on direct Guest feedback.” The changes:

  • Sweeter mayo — reformulated recipe
  • Updated bun — texture change per Guest feedback
  • Cardboard clamshell box — replaces paper wrap, similar to the Big Mac’s, aimed at reducing squashed burgers in the bag

Reaction has been mixed. Some longtime fans miss the old mayo; others say the sandwich tastes the same and only the box looks different. If your Whopper has looked or tasted slightly different lately, this is why, it’s not a mistake at your local store.

Ingredients

The flame-grilling, over open fire rather than a flat griddle, is what gives it the smoky char other fast-food burgers don’t have.

  • Quarter-pound flame-grilled beef patty (100% beef, no fillers)
  • Sesame seed bun
  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles, sliced onion
  • Ketchup and mayonnaise

A Bit of History

The Whopper launched in 1957 for 37 cents, a full decade before McDonald’s introduced the Big Mac. The Whopper Jr. has a stranger origin: in 1963, a Puerto Rico franchise owner ran out of regular buns before opening day and swapped in smaller ones out of necessity, the smaller size stuck and became its own permanent menu item. In 2020, Burger King removed artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors from the core menu, including the Whopper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Burger King’s “Have It Your Way” system lets you remove any topping or add extra patties, cheese, or bacon for an added cost, no special request needed at the counter. Want to go further? The Burger King Secret Menu covers off-menu Whopper builds like the Mustard Whopper.

One large flame-grilled patty versus two smaller griddle-cooked patties, and mayo/ketchup instead of Big Mac sauce. The Whopper is also the older of the two by a decade.

Ask for it “off the broiler.” It’s an actual button on Burger King registers, not just slang, and gets you a freshly-cooked patty.
